This is one of the most unique dining experiences in the world! Visit an authentic Swiss grotto restaurant with me. You’ll find grotto restaurants in the Ticino or Italian speaking region of Switzerland. The cave like grotto restaurants were originally built as natural rock cellars in which to store food and are usually found hidden in the woods or right by the lakes.
Lake Lugano has some incredible grotto restaurants. I recommend visiting Grotto dei Pescatori which is only accessible by boat. Catch the boat from Paradiso and be sure to buy a round trip ticket for CHF 20 and the boat will pick you up again directly from the grotto restaurant two hours later.
The menu at the grotto restaurants showcase the diverse Ticino region cuisine. Swiss saffron risotto is a must along with fresh seafood from the lakes. We tried a bolognese gnocchi and a seafood ragu and I can honestly say that was some of the best pasta I’ve ever tasted.
After a sunset dinner at Grotto dei Pescatori the boat ride back to Lugano at night is magical.
