Platelet-rich rich plasma, or PRP, is an exciting treatment to try to heal muscle and tendon injuries without surgery. Unlike cortisone, which as a steroid is very harmful to muscle, tendons, and ligaments, making them weaker, less likely to heal, and more likely to rupture, PRP doesn't have those negative effects.
PRP is a treatment that has been around for over a decade, but it’s still considered experimental by insurance companies. PRP is a treatment in which we draw a small amount of blood, like you’re getting lab work. Then we spin the syringe of blood in a centrifuge to remove the red blood cells. What remains is the plasma, filled with platelets that contain growth factors and other nutrients that nourish the damaged tissue and help it heal.
PRP has been shown to be helpful for a number of musculoskeletal conditions, including muscle and tendon injuries. Common injuries I've had good success using PRP with are lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis or tendinosis, and hamstring injuries, but it can potentially be a great option for all kinds of muscle, tendon, and ligament injuries.
