On Monday, the 83 year old Jesuit priest and tribal rights activist, Father Stan Swamy passed away in a private hospital in Mumbai. Swamy had been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and was being investigated for his alleged connection in the Elgar Parishad case.
During his time in jail his health severely deteriorated and even though he applied for bail multiple times, his pleas were rejected. There are now several questions that have been raised about the case that was made out against him, and about the evidence that the NIA has relied on.
In this episode, Indian Express’ Sadaf Modak, who has been reporting on the Elgaar Parishad conspiracy, joins us to talk about this case from the beginning and the questions it raises about India’s justice system.
