Pus popping is done with an 18 guage needle to relieve pain and resolve a thumbnail infection, or paronychia. This finger infection will heal well through adequate pus drainage. No antibiotics are necessary in a patient with a normal immune system if drainage is adequate. This infection would be called a felon if it was located closer to the distal finger pad instead of occurring under the thumbnail.
A journal article was referenced which described a study finding that antibiotics do not improve outcomes in paronychia drainage. Acute felon and paronychia: Antibiotics not necessary after surgical treatment. Prospective study of 46 patients.
