Any pilot taking control of ANY aircraft must carry out pre-flight checks before powering up. Both cockpit and external checks must be carried. Checks can vary from visual inspections of the condition of parts of the aircraft, to specific readings and messages on certain instruments.
Externally, pilots will have a visual check at the radar, pylons and armament. They will be looking for fluid leakage and any flaws such as damage. All aircraft are different but although process will be the same, I will guess that pilots have their own routines too.
The aircraft would have undergone checks from the technicians but the pilot flying the aircraft will not only check the externals but there are cockpit checks to carry out too.
When you are at RAF Coningsby or any other base, look out for the red covers plugged in the sections of the aircraft. These MUST be removed and there are messages all over the cover to remove them. These covers are in places such as the engine air intakes and the rear ends too. These covers simply prevent any animals, yes animals and other foreign objects getting into to the engines and open parts of the aircraft. Failure to remove these covers can damage the aircraft and risk the life of the pilot. The covers are also there to protect the sections of the aircraft from damage too. Some have pins that need pulling out too.
I am not a pilot or have any experience in any way, so my research is of civvy level. Ted has tried to explain things but some checks remain top secret until our special visit and tour from Flt Lt Jame Sainty next year inside RAF CONINGSBY and 29 Squadron.
Ted was at the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre and was lucky enough to carry out checks in the BAe Harrier GR3 and the HAWKER SEA HAWK. When visiting Cornwall, make sure you add this to your list of things to do. It is an absolutely brilliant place to visit with the tour guides being exceptionally knowledgeable and add to the experience. You will be able to get inside a good handful of the aircraft there.
As it is in the vicinity of RAF MAWGAN and Cornwall Airport Newquay, you might see some RAF and other military planes visiting.
