J.Crew, from it's beginnings as a mail-order catalogue, through to it's brick and mortar expansion had always been a pillar of the American retail system. However, after a long series of failed revamp attempts after their preppy style fell out of style, J.Crew has simply struggled to keep up. Their logistics was too clunky to be sufficiently nimble and eventually they lost their audience. Today, though still trying to compete, the market is truly flooded with other similar, and often more desirable, brands that effectively deliver a similar product thats more desirable. There's still time before the clock runs out, but certainly since declaring bankruptcy they need another great run if they hope to survive
