The World Wrestling Federation (now known as WWE) experienced the Attitude Era from approximately 1997 to 2002. It was distinguished by edgy, contentious programming and a roster of wrestlers who were larger than life and frequently exaggerated their real-life personas. The Attitude Era was a reaction to the popularity of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), which had been outperforming the WWF in the ratings for several years. WWF's Attitude Era programming, which included the popular Monday Night Raw and SmackDown! shows, helped the company win the ratings battle, leading to the company's acquisition of WCW in 2001. The Attitude Era is widely regarded as one of the most successful and popular eras in professional wrestling history.
