Mutation, polymorphism, and substitution are three completely different concepts in biology, but they are often confused with one another.
A common mistake is to say that a population mutated when we really mean that they evolved or experienced a substitution.
Populations don't mutate, individuals do. Those new mutations may increase in frequency to become polymorphisms however and if they fix they become substitutions.
Using the wrong words can lead use into thinking incorrectly so keeping the distinction between mutation and evolution is important.
