During the Second World War, there were horrific crimes conducted inside of the concentration camps. One of the most barbaric sites of cruelty was Bergen-Belsen, a camp which became hugely overcrowded as the war turned against the Germans. Thousands of prisoners were sent to Belsen, and disease was rife and each day thousands of people were becoming victims of Belsen. It's estimated that around 50,000 prisoners died there mostly from the conditions. In April 1945, the camp was handed over to the British for liberation and the liberators found tragedy around every corner. But amongst the ill prisoners, the British found a number of SS guards and members of staff who had remained at the camp.

The camp's commandant Josef Kramer (The Beast Of Belsen) was arrested, as were guards such as Irma Grese, Elisabeth Volkenrath, Franz Hossler and Fritz Klein. There were more who were then brought to trial and after there were a number of executions carried out by British executioner Albert Pierrepoint. On the 13th December 1945 a number of the condemned including Kramer and Grese were brought to the gallows where they were executed by Pierrepoint. The Belsen Trials and the subsequent executions were some of the first of the post-war world, and thousands more would occur with many other trials punishing guards of other concentration camps.
