Warthogs are primarily grazing here but also digging out bulbs, roots and grubs.
Warthogs often feed on their knees allowing them to locate and root out food with their sensitive noses while still keeping a close watch on their surroundings. Small and seemingly defenseless against lions, leopards or hyenas, that hunt them on the savanna, the warthogs’ quick response to danger, and razor-sharp tusks, make them a formidable prey. To protect their knees against the thorny African bush, they develop thick callouses as knee pads.
