What is the Magisterium and why is it important?

The Apostles handed on the deposit of faith, contained in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, to their successors in the Church.

From its earliest history, however, people struggled to understand correctly that deposit of faith. This is one of the reasons Jesus appointed the Twelve Apostles to lead the Church to teach and preach to the people of God.

The Apostles appointed successors to carry on their role as preachers, teachers, and leaders of the Church.

The term "Magisterium" is used to refer to the successors of the Apostles whose task it is to authentically interpret the Word of God in Scripture and Tradition.

The Magisterium includes the bishops in communion with the successor of St. Peter, the pope. Together the Magisterium defines dogmas and clarify the teachings of the Church.
