Amidst rising fresh tensions between the Islamic republic and the United States, hundreds of thousands of Iranians attended nationwide rallies on Friday to celebrate the 38th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979.
People in the Iranian cities swarmed to the streets carrying flags and banners in support of the Islamic establishment leaders and chanted anti-U.S., and anti-Israeli slogans.
The rallies in capital Tehran turned into a demonstration against the recent U.S. sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile program, and against new U.S. administration's travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran.
They also chanted slogans against some regional allies of the United States, including Saudi Arabia.
Addressing the large gathering in Tehran's Azadi (liberty) square, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani said that the nationwide rallies to celebrate the 38th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic revolution are a reaction to the recent threats of the U.S. officials against Iran.
"Now we are facing a problem. Some newcomers in this region and the new power-holder of the U.S., they have to know to use respectful language to speak with Iran. Iran's people will resolutely fight back any forces that try to threaten our government and army. They must know that our country is united, stable and vigilant. We will fight to the end," said Rouhani.
But in Rouhani's one hour speech, he talked little in response to the U.S. President Donald Trump's moves toward Iran. Iranian analysts say Iran doesn't want to escalate the tense situation. At present, the policies of the U.S. government is not clear regarding Iran, so Iran will keep observing and show restraint.
However, Trump's measures have stirred many Iranians' wrath. An Iranian student said she hopes to show their solidarity to the U.S. government through this rally.
"I want to tell the U.S. that everyone here today,be them students who will build Iran's future or others, have come here to show their solidarity. The U.S. has better not try to disrupt us. No matter how many times you [the U.S.] say we are supporters of terrorism, we will continue to defend those underdogs," said Fateme.
Referring to U.S. accusation over Iran launching missile tests, Noora, another Iranian student, said Iran has the right to launch missile tests and Iran is not afraid of threats.
"There are many countries that have a variety of missiles in the world. Some countries are the number one weapon buyers in the world, but they say we can't have missiles. We are defending our homes. Like our leader said we don't hope to launch any wars, but if one day the enemy dare to violate peace, they will regret it," said Noora.
