Stowmarket Station is located on the GEML between London Liverpool Street and Norwich as well as being at the junction of lines from Cambridge and Peterborough. The station enjoys a hourly service to Norwich and London Liverpool Street. A hourly service to Cambridge and two hourly service to Peterborough.

The station has two platforms linked by a footbridge, at the north end of the station a signal box which is still in use is located to control Level Crossings in the area. At the south end of the station a goods loop and small freight yard is located which house the leaf busting trains in the autumn that go around cleaning the rails of leaves and weeds.
A good amount of freight passes through the station on the way to/from the port at Felixstowe a few aggregate workings also pass through the station heading to various quarries in the area.
