I’m pretty sure you’re hoping to visit an onsen hot spring when you visit Japan. Please allow me to give you a hint on how to choose the best onsen.
It is to look out for where the onsen is within the facility. For example, some ryokan have two baths: an open-air bath with a view on the top floor and a large bath in the basement.
Which would you choose?
Of course they would both be great, but onsen lovers tend to go to the one in the basement. Why? It’s because the hot spring water comes from underground.
In other words, if an onsen facility has its own hot spring source, .the hot spring water is fresher in the basement. Sometimes the onsen on the higher floors are actually not an onsen, but just a bath with hot water.
How about going to the open-air bath when you can see the sunrise or sunset, and going to the basement when you want to enjoy a more luxurious bath?
