BMW has unveiled the refreshed 2 Series Coupe for the 2024 model year, giving the compact two-door a light redesign inside and out. But with the current generation's underpinnings carrying over, is this mid-cycle update enough to keep the 2er feeling fresh?
On the outside, the revised 2 Series gets some mild styling tweaks to differentiate it from the pre-facelift model. The signature BMW kidney grilles now sport a pearlesecent chrome surround, and the lower bodywork trim is now body-colored instead of black plastic. M Sport models also get a black diffuser element at the rear. The interior sees a bigger change with
BMW's latest curved display taking prominence on the dashboard, running the updated iDrive 8.5 operating system.
Under the skin, the 2 Series soldiers on with its current powertrain lineup. The range kicks off with a 156-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four in the 218i, while the 230i gets a 245-hp version of that engine. The inline-six M240i xDrive continues as the top dog, with 374 hp and standard all-wheel drive. A 190-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel (the 220d) is also available in certain markets.
Unfortunately, there's no manual transmission option.
While the updated tech and infotainment are welcome upgrades, the carry-over chassis and powertrains mean the driving experience likely won't deviate much from the current car. The 2 Series has always been a sweetheart to drive, but it's facing increasingly stiff competition from newer entries like the Toyota GR Supra and Nissan Z.
The bigger question is whether BMW will follow up this light refresh with an all-new 2 Series for the next generation, or if the iconic rear-wheel-drive coupe will be replaced by a more mainstream front-wheel-drive-based model to cut costs. If this is one of the last rear-driven 2 Series models, BMW would be wise to give it a more substantial update to make it appeal to driving enthusiasts one last time.
The facelifted 2024 BMW 2 Series Coupe will arrive in showrooms this August, with pricing to be announced closer to its on-sale date. While the updates may seem minor on paper, we'll need to drive it to see if BMW has managed to keep the magic alive in this compact premium coupe.
