US Marines on Wednesday (23/8) continued to engage in high-profile
manoeuvres with Jordanian forces in Jordan's southern desert.
Authorities from both sides sought to play down speculation that
the war games were linked to the defection of Iraqi General
Hussein Kamel Hassan, or speculation Iraq might be preparing to
attack one of its neighbours. Jordanian spokesman Brigadier Hamid Sarayreh said the manoeuvres had nothing to do with the defection or the Iraqi troop movements, a comment supported by an American general
participating in the exercises.
