With the huge supply problems with face masks and respirators this year, it's no surprise that counterfeit options are making a big debut on the market. Buying masks that don't meet quality standards can present a risk to yourself and employees of coronavirus infections, but how can you tell if you're purchasing a good batch or not?

On July 27th, the CDC, which oversees NIOSH, updated their guidance to help consumers identify products that are falsely marketed and sold as being NIOSH-approved respirators during the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, they noted that in future when NIOSH becomes aware of counterfeit respirators, they will post them to alert users, purchasers and manufacturers.

So how do you know if you got a good batch of PPE or not? Well, here are some of the signs:

1. NIOSH-approved respirators have an approval label on or in the packaging of the respirator. You can expect to find it on the box or with the user's instructions.
2. In addition, an abbreviated approval should be visible on the items of PPE themselves. You can verify the approval number by going to the NIOSH Certified Equipment List or the NIOSH Trusted Source page, both of which are linked below. NIOSH-approved FFRs will always have one the following designations: N95, N99, N100, R95, R99, R100, P95, P99, P100.
