Over 70 Whales Die On Scottish Island In "Biggest Mass Stranding In Decades"
A group of 77 pilot whales died after washing ashore on an Orkney beach in Scotland, marking one of the largest mass strandings in decades. The British Divers Marine Life Rescue found 12 whales still alive while stranded on Tresness Beach, Sanday. Despite efforts to refloat them failing, the decision was made to euthanise the whales. The pod consisted of male whales up to 7 meters long, females, calves, and juveniles. Experts are uncertain about the cause of the stranding but suggest it may have begun when one whale encountered trouble and the rest of the pod attempted to assist. Public access to the area is restricted during post-mortem examinations.
