Continuing with Offaly Libraries’ History Lecture Series, our second lecture
presented by Dr Ciarán Reilly documents the 1798 Rebellion in the Faithful County.
In the summer of that fateful year, Ireland was engulfed in a rebellion led by the Society of United Irishmen. While Offaly was a not a main theatre of war, it was badly affected by the violence. From Shinrone to Edenderry, the United Irish conspiracy had taken root in the years prior to the rebellion. This lecture will examine the impact of the United Irishmen in Offaly and how the authorities quashed the rebellion there.
