This was some different stuff. A bold experiment. But that led to some of the freshest, most unique, groovin’ music to ever hit the Blue Note stage. Chick has a side that few know. An affinity for “electronica”. Loops, synths, soundscapes and grooves — but all with the inimitable Corea-touch. For these two incredible nights, Chick assembled the son and a grandson of legends — Bobby McFerrin's son Taylor McFerrin on beatbox, keyboards and loops, and Roy Haynes’ grandson, Marcus Gilmore (a longtime Chick musician partner) this time on both acoustic and electronic drums. Add to that Cuban saxophonist and percussionist (plus, as it turns out, vocalist) Yosvany Terry — and you've got a musical creation that those who witnessed it will be talking about for a long time. Week Four ended with a reprise of Chick’s Flamenco Heart: Jorge Pardo on flute, Niño Josele on guitar, Carles Benavent on bass, Tom Brechtlein on drums and Nino de las Reyes' dancing and palmas. The music was incendiary and the flamencos came out in great numbers, making it a Madrid party smack dab in the middle of the Village. To top it all off, Chick played the National Anthem and a half-time show at the New York Knicks game vs. the Dallas Mavericks. Chick delivered a special rendition of "Spain" with his flamenco band — which had the players, coaches and fans buzzing.
