Vito Scotti played Dr. Boris Balinkoff, but he also played many roles on Broadway, in films, and on television, from the late 1930s to the mid 1990s. He was known as a man of a thousand faces for his ability to assume so many divergent roles in more than 200 screen appearances in a career spanning 50 years and for his resourceful portrayals of various ethnic types.
Russell Johnson is known for his role as Professor Roy Hinkley. He was also known for Marshal Gib Scott in Black Saddle. He reprised this character for three Gilligan's Island made-for-television movies and two animated series. In a 2004 interview, Johnson commented about the role and shared his perspective regarding Gilligan's Island and the situation comedy's place in television history: "It used to make me upset to be typecast as the Professor...But as the years have gone by, I've given in. It's brought a lot of joy to people, and that's not a bad legacy." Johnson died from kidney failure at his home in Bainbridge Island, Washington, on January 16, 2014, aged 89.
Natalie Schafer performed in many films, usually portraying sophisticates; including "Lovey Howell" on Gilligan's Island. She reprised her role in made-for-television spin-off films after the show ended, along with the animated spinoff Gilligan's Planet in 1982. Schafer died of liver cancer in her Beverly Hills home, at the age of 90.
Jim Backus was best-known for his role as Thurston Howell III, but he also played James Dean's character's father in Rebel Without a Cause, he voiced Mr. Magoo, and he starred in his own show of one season, The Jim Backus Show, also known as Hot Off the Wire. Backus was an avid golfer and made the 36-hole cut at the 1964 Bing Crosby Pro-Am tournament. On July 3, 1989, Backus died in Los Angeles from complications of pneumonia after suffering from Parkinson's disease for many years.
Alan Hale Jr. had a television career spanned four decades, but he was best known for his co-starring role as Captain Jonas Grumby. Hale appeared in more than 200 films and television roles from 1941, and also appeared on several talk and variety shows. In addition to acting, Hale co-owned Alan Hale's Lobster Barrel, a restaurant he opened in the mid-1970s. The Lobster Barrel was located on La Cienega Boulevard on Los Angeles's Restaurant Row. Hale died on January 2, 1990, of thymus cancer at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles at age 68.
Bob Denver is best known as Gilligan, and he continued to appear as Gilligan in several movies, as a guest on other television series, in personal appearances, and as a voice actor in the animated version of the series. On September 2, 2005, Denver, a heavy smoker, died at age 70 from complications following throat cancer surgery.
Dawn Wells is best known for her role as Mary Ann Summers. Following Gilligan's Island, Wells embarked on a theater career, appearing in nearly one hundred theatrical productions as of July 2009.
Tina Louise is best known for playing movie star Ginger Grant. Over time, she became unhappy with the role and worried that it would typecast her. The series ended in 1967 and she continued to work in film and made guest appearances on television. Louise declined to participate in any of three Gilligan's Island reunion television films. Despite maintaining a steady acting career after the series ended, she stated repeatedly that the show had actually ruined her career.
