Netanyahu Fires Israeli Defence Minister | Vantage with Palki Sharma

Protests erupted in Israel after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over 'crisis of trust'. "Over the past few months, trust has eroded. In light of this, I decided today to end the term of the defence minister," Netanyahu said in a statement. Following the announcement, Gallant wrote on X (Twitter), "The security of the State of Israel was and will always remain the mission of my life." Soon after, a group of protestors took over the streets and chanted slogans against the Netanyahu-led government. They held up signs with slogans such as "We deserve better leaders" and "Leaving no one behind!". Gallant said in a televised statement that his dismissal was the result of a dispute over three things: The issue of ultra-Orthodox military service, abandonment of hostages in Gaza, and the need for an official inquiry into Hamas’ October 7 attack. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz will be the new Defence Minister. Meanwhile, Gideon Saar has been appointed to succeed Katz as Foreign Minister. The protestors are now calling on Saar to prioritise a hostage deal to return the captives still held in Gaza.
