The Free State Government is slowly exiting the infamous international bursary programme, as the Special Investigating Unit is currently probing the initiative, that was meant to financially support disadvantaged students.
This was revealed by the provincial government following the discloser by the beneficiaries of the programme that they were struggling to get employed with their international qualifications.
Mismanagement of funds, corruption, fraud and foreign nationals benefiting from the programme are some of the findings that have emerged since the inception of the SIU's investigation in 2018.
The programme was the brainchild of former Premier Ace Magashule and has cost the government about R3.9 billion to date.
