Clava Cairns: Exploring a 4000 Year Old Site
The Clava Cairns, currently determined to be approximately 4,000 years old, were constructed to shelter the dead. The cemetery continued as a sacred place in the environment for millennia and offers many indications in the beliefs of Bronze Age society.[1]
Each cairn has central chamber, the outer two cairns have access passages, but the central ring cairn is fully surrounded and all of them are encircled by a stone circle. The three major cairns are arranged in a line running north-east to south-west. The passages of the two cairns are also aligned towards the south-west suggesting links to the midwinter sunset. The standing stones are graded in height with the tallest facing the setting sun in the south-west which also suggests a focus on the midwinter sunset. [2]
What remains currently would have once been part of a greater complex. Two parts of the complex, Balnuaran of Clava and Milton of Clava, are open to the public. The sites contain a range of prehistoric burial monuments and the remains of a medieval chapel. [3]
