US President Joe Biden heaped praise on the Ukrainian people for defending their homeland against the Russian invasion while warning that President Vladimir Putin would pay a price for sending troops into that country. He was speaking during his first State of the Union address, drawing bipartisan support from the often divided joint-sitting on western efforts to impose economic costs on Russia for the conflict. Biden also announced the closure of American airspace to Russian aircraft, following Europe and Canada that earlier imposed similar measures as part of a broad and ever-expanding package of sanctions imposed against Moscow.
