Supreme Court justices, members of Congress, and others will arrive at the U.S. Capitol Tuesday for President Jimmy Carter’s lying-in-state ceremony.
Vice President Kamala Harris is set to deliver one of the eulogies for Carter following his death on December 29 at the age of 100.
ATLANTA AND DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, GEORGIA; JOINT BASE ANDREWS, MARYLAND; AND WASHINGTON, D.C. – The body of Jimmy Carter, the former U.S. president who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100, will be flown from Atlanta to Washington to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. His funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 9.
Late former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who has been lying in repose at the Carter Center since Saturday, travels to Dobbins Air Base, before travelling to Washington for a service at the U.S. Capitol. The casket of the former president is expected to leave the Carter Center at 1600GMT, after a departure ceremony, before reaching Dobbins Air Base at 1720GMT. From there, the late president and his family will arrive at Joint Base Andrews at 1915GMT, followed by arrival to Navy Memorial at 2030GMT and departure from the Navy Memorial at 2045GMT, before arriving at the Capitol at 2110GMT. The service in the rotunda, which lasts approximately 45 minutes, will begin at 2130GMT. At 0100GMT, the repose opens up to the public for a duration of approximately five hours.
