A Tennessee Riverkeeper cleanup resulted in more than 2,600 pounds of litter being removed from the Cumberland River near the Cleeces Ferry Boat Ramp.
Most of the litter was made from some form of plastic, most commonly polystyrene ("styrofoam"), polyethylene (plastic bottles and shopping bags) and polypropylene (straws). There were also 42 tires removed from during this Cumberland River cleanup.
“These events show that a few people can make a difference, and cleanups provide some hope for hundreds of thousands of citizens who are concerned about our blessed river and its tributaries," Tennessee Riverkeeper founder David Whiteside said. "Clean water is a nonpartisan issue; we are all in this together.”
