Shostakovich completed his melancholic Fourth String Quartet in 1949. Due to the intervention of the Communist Party, which forced him to distance himself from his earlier work because it was not in line with their ideology, it could not be premiered until four years later. In the string quartet, the 'forbidden' influences of Jewish folk music can be heard strongly, especially in the third and fourth movements.
