Russia is usually not the most popular subject on Youtube. Which is a shame, really, because if you look beyond the politics, the country is actually pretty amazing. While everybody knows about Texas, Alaska or New York, very few people have ever heard of Russian places, other than Moscow. Such is the case with Kostroma, a place that's deeply connected to Russian history. Why? That's what we're set to find out today.

1. Kostroma Oblast is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). It is located in the northeast of the European part of Russia.
2. From c. 300 CE the current area of Kostroma, with the exception the area east of the Unzha River, was part of the Finno-Ugric peoples' lands, such as the Merya people and their loose tribal confederation.
3. Kostroma is a historic city and the administrative center of Kostroma Oblast, Russia. A part of the Golden Ring of Russian towns, it is located at the confluence of the rivers Volga and Kostroma. Kostroma is one of the oldest Russian cities with a rich historical and cultural heritage.
4. "Kologrivsky forest" is a state natural reserve. Since 2009, it has been named after its founder and first director, Maksim Grigorievich Sinitsyn. In 2020 it is included in the list of UNESCO biosphere reserves.
5. Tourist trip to the Kostroma region is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the monuments of Russian architecture of the 16th-19th centuries. Kostroma, is part of the famous tourist route “the Golden Ring of Russia”. There is a number of preserved merchant and noble estates of the 19th century in the city.
6. The name “Kostroma” is explained by historians in different ways. According to one version, the city was named after the Kostroma River, on the banks of which it stands. According to another version, the name may be associated with one of the characters of peasant beliefs - Kostroma - a straw scarecrow usually burned with the advent of spring.
7. At the beginning of the 17th century, Russia was plunged into the abyss of the Troubles. Shortly after the expulsion of the invaders, Kostroma was at the center of events that had an all-Russian significance. In 1613, the Zemsky Sobor elected Mikhail F. Romanov, who was in the Ipatiev Monastery at that time. That's where the Great Moscow Embassy in order to give the young king the fate of the Russian state. After the accession of Mikhail Fyodorovich, representatives of the House of Romanov began to honor the Ipatiev Monastery as their family shrine and, ascending to the throne, considered it their duty to visit Kostroma. Each visit brought something into the life and appearance of the city.
