A virtual visit in 3D to the exhibition "OMAGGIO A COSIMO I. Una biografia tessuta. Gli arazzi seicenteschi in onore di Cosimo I - Weaving a Biography. 17th century tapestries in honour of Cosimo I", concluded last September 29th at Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
To celebrate the five hundredth anniversary of the birth of Cosimo I de' Medici, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, the Gallerie degli Uffizi held an exhibition of nine large tapestries with which Ferdinand II praised his predecessor in the 17th century.
The tapestries were originally located in the Sala di Saturno of Palazzo Pitti, which now houses part of the paintings of the Galleria Palatina.
For this reason and for the fragility of the artworks, it was not possible to put them back in their original position.
The curators requested a 3D reality-based model to study the initial layout as described in archival documents. The results were presented in virtual form, also allowing the visitor to understand the architectural transformations of the room.
A 3D point model (obtained by laser scanning) shows the main facade of the building, on which the route followed by the ancient guests to the Sala di Saturno is highlighted. Another textured photogrammetric model shows the current layout, followed by a reconstruction of the room in the 17th century, where the tapestries are finally displayed.
