Hospital bombed
Doctors Without Borders reports that an air strike has hit its hospital in Idlib. Witnesses say the attack killed at least nine people. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is based in the UK, blamed the attack on a Russian air strike. Meanwhile, Russian bombs hit a hospital in the north. At least 14 were killed.
Shelling of YPG positions
The Kurdish YPG says it won’t withdraw from its positions in northern Syria, along the border with Turkey. The prime minister of Turkey, Ahmet Davutoglu has warned the YPG to retreat after the militants seized a Syrian air base. The Turkish army has been f22iring artillery across the border since YPG shells hit Turkish territory. The Kurdish YPG is the Syrian branch of the PKK, a terror group based in Turkey’s southeast. Davutoglu says that Ankara’s cross-border shelling follows what he called ‘the rules of engagement against forces that represented a threat in Azaz and the surrounding area.’
Former anti-doping chief dies
The former head of Russia’s anti-doping agency has died. It’s suspected Nikita Kamaev had a heart attack. He resigned two months ago after Russia was accused of state-sponsored doping at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Last November, the International Association of Athletics Federations provisionally suspended Moscow from international competition. The ban includes the Rio Olympics in August.
EU application submitted
The minister of foreign affairs for the EU says that Bosnia and Herzegovina has applied to join the bloc. But Federica Mogherini says the country hasn’t met all necessary conditions to formally submit its application. The 28 members of the EU will now go over the application. Mogherini says EU member states should feel a sense of responsibility after seeing neighbours’ ‘energy and willingness to join. ‘
