We look today at a no gi entry into the Achilles lock - also known as the straight ankle lock - from the top while passing the guard. Most leg lock finishes are twisting locks, like the heel hook, which tend to do more damage. BUT it doesn’t mean that there isn’t a value to working the straight ankle lock, both for control and because there are some pretty powerful finishes with it. Plenty of high-level practitioners have used the achilles lock with great success.
This particular attack is an ashi garami entry out of our partner’s guard. The warning is that there is some back exposure when we rotate to finish, but this version is stronger than the average straight ankle lock which makes the risk worth the reward. We pay special attention to the direction of our knees, our posture and the rotational finish.
