November 15, 2019 - During the second day of public impeachment hearings, Rep. Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, showed former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, a tweet that President Donald Trump posted during her testimony.
In Friday morning's tweet, Trump said "everywhere” that Yovanovitch went in the world “turned bad.” Referring to her years in the foreign service, Trump added: "She started in Somalia, how did that go?" Asked if she could respond to Trump's tweet, Yovanovitch said the president's attacks are "very intimidating." "I can't speak to what the president is trying to do, but I think the effect is to be intimidating," she said. Schiff told Yovanovitch that "some of us here take witness intimidation very, very seriously." The impeachment probe centers around a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Yovanovitch has testified that she was forced out of her position after Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, engineered a smear campaign against her.
