William Safire, presidential speech writer, wrote the following memo to White House Chief of Staff, H. R. Haldeman, suggesting how the administration should respond if the Apollo 11 astronauts were stranded on the moon. It contained the rough draft of a speech intended to be read by President Richard Nixon if disaster befell the astronauts.
