The Most Controversial Dam in the World? Africa's $5 Billion Megadam
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a massive hydroelectric dam currently under construction on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia. When completed, it will be the largest dam in Africa and the seventh-largest in the world. The dam is expected to generate over 5,000 megawatts of electricity, which will more than double Ethiopia's current power output. It will also provide water for irrigation and industrial use.
The construction of the GERD has been controversial, with Egypt and Sudan expressing concerns that the dam will reduce the amount of water flowing downstream to their countries. Egypt relies on the Nile River for more than 90% of its water supply, and Sudan uses the river for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation.
The GERD is a major development project with the potential to transform Ethiopia's economy and improve the lives of millions of people. However, it is also a source of tension between Ethiopia and its downstream neighbours.
