In this presentation, Professor of Religious Studies, Rich McCarty, highlights how contemporary paranormal reports—such as monster encounters, UFO/UAP experiences, and spirit visitations—have the power to reshape conventional religious beliefs. Drawing on comparative religious studies, demographic data, and engagement with people’s reports of paranormal encounters, McCarty suggests that there is a dynamic interplay of paranormal and religious beliefs, which can (and do) influence and transform each other. McCarty further suggests that this interplay of beliefs may result in a Copernican shift of religious worldviews, which might forever change how people talk about theology and ethics.
