Pioneer released a new version of their dj management software: Rekordbox 5.0 and Rekordbox DJ 5.
What are the new features?
Is it indeed faster (as Pioneer claims) or is it a marketing stunt?
See for yourself in a head to head speed comparison between version 4 and 5
In this review about Pioneers DJ management software I'll show you Rekordbox 4 and 5 side by side.

Let’s go over a couple of new features and changes.
Before you begin, please make sure that you make a backup first

You can download Rekordbox for free from pioneers website.
Not pioneerdj.com but rekordbox.com

The software itself will show that there is a new version available.
[REKORDBOX SAYS NEW UPDATE]
When you install Rekordbox 5 it will install next to Rekordbox 4, it will not replace Rekordbox 4.
So you can go back if you want to. But can not run them at the same time (and would you want to).
Install Rekordbox 5.
In launchpad only the icon of Rekordbox 5 is shown, but my icon in the task bar will start Rekordbox 4.
The first thing I noticed that it starts way way quicker.
And that is the first point i'd like to address: speed and responsiveness.
Rekordbox wasnt very fast, even with an SSD.
Pioneer says that they have reprogrammed the engine of Rekordbox.
The speed has improved. It’s still not lightning fast, but it is quicker.
Now you see realtime the startup speed on the same computer with an SSD drive.
[FOOTAGE COMPARE START RB4/5]
Pioneer says it has reprogrammed the engine under the hood of Rekordbox to be quicker.

footage rekordbox 4/5 speed
-startup
-analyse song
-switching export to performance mode
-load song from controller
-search song
Its defenitly quicker, but I cant say that it is really fast.
Switching between export and performace mode still takes a few seconds.
And analyzing songs is still not quick.
Visually I noticed that the Graphical User Interface is much more cleaner than before.
It makes me think of Serato, which isn't a bad thing.
When I look at the tracks, I can see 7 tracks in stead of 8 without having to scroll, so that is a penalty for Pioneer.
But the playlists on the other hand
The icons are smaller, the font seems larger and the space between the items is smaller so you can see more playlists in one overview.

One of the new features worth mentioning is the 2 way device sync.
[PICTURE]
In Rekordbox 4 you could export songs to USB, but not from USB to Rekordbox.
That has changed in Rekordbox 5.
In theory you could take someone else's USB drive with a Rekordbox library and import it into your own.
The synchronisation feature in Rekordbox 4 didnt function properly in the first place (sometimes not all your songs were exported to your usb), so I'm a bit skeptical.
Synchronisation algorithms in computer programs in generaly are always a bit quirky.
Duplicates and non-synchronised items are no exception is the most advanced programs.
Even a big tech giant like Apple has synchronisation issues with their notes/calendar and Reminder icloud apps.
Regretfully I can't show you yet HOW this works and IF this works.
Another new feature is that you can play music directly from your usb drive.
[FOOTAGE]
The players in Rekordbox DJ work somewhat different.
You can now set directly loop in and out points (without a controller).
And also double the loop and cut it in half.
You can also directly edit the cuepoints from the performance mode.
And directly input the BPM for a track
Also nudging a track back and forth has become a bit more intuitive.
What I don’t like is that buttons in general have become smaller.
You have to aim your mouse cursor real precise, which can be a bit frustrating.
It’s very easy to miss a button, for example the quantize function has become a really small button in the export mode too.
In Rekordbox 4 the button was large and prominent.
Also the CUE and PLAY have become teeny tiny buttons.
