Ombre cakes are very popular, but if you're like me, you can't stand the harsh lines that sometimes accompany them. So how can they be avoided? It all starts with your colors! When making this ombre, I separated equal amounts of buttercream into 3 bowls (the remaining buttercream I left white). I then mixed my darkest color, adding about 1/4 tsp of color to one bowl and mixing until all the buttercream was colored evenly. Then to make my middle color, I took about 2 tablesppoons of the dark colored buttercream and added it to my next bowl. Mix, then take 2 tablespoons of the middle color and add it to the last bowl of white frosting to make the lightest shade. This method is guesswork free, as you are guarenteed three shades that match and blend perfectly.
My next tip, start from the bottom of your cake and overlap the frosting as you add your colors. When smoothing out the buttercream, the overlapping frosting with mix slightly, giving the cake a seamless gradient of color. At this step I also don't want to overmix my colors so I am making sure to clean my bench scraper after every pass. There is nothing worse than bright pink making an appearance in the white section lol.
Lastly, it's time to patch the holes. I try to fill each hole with a mix of two colors so it continues to add to the gradient effect.
