Mets Rally in Ninth to Beat Phillies 6-5 and Split London Series
The Philadelphia Phillies fell to the New York Mets 6-5 on Sunday, splitting their two-game London Series. Despite the loss, Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed enthusiasm about the experience. “I thought it was a great experience. I would do it every year if we could,” Thomson said. Bryce Harper echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of entertaining the London fans: “It was important to put on a good show for fans in London during the 2-game #LondonSeries.”
Thomson acknowledged the bullpen's struggles, noting they were "rusty" but defended reliever José Alvarado. "I thought his stuff was really good, just missing. I still trust him a great deal," he said.
The game ended dramatically when Mets catcher Luis Torrens turned Nick Castellanos' bases-loaded roller into a game-ending double play. The Mets rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the ninth inning against Alvarado (1-3), who blew his second save in 13 opportunities. Mark Vientos tied the game with an RBI single, Pete Alonso forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch, and a passed ball by J.T. Realmuto allowed the Mets to take a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Reed Garrett (6-2) allowed two batters to reach base. Bryce Harper then loaded the bases with a single off Drew Smith, and Alec Bohm forced in a run with a walk. Castellanos hit a ball in front of the plate, which Torrens fielded, stepping on home for a forceout and throwing to first for the final out, with Alonso making a falling stretch to secure the win.
“What a great play, the instincts not to only go get the baseball, but having the ability to come back, touch the plate and then execute the throw — unbelievable play,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.
David Dahl, recently called up from AAA, hit a pinch-hit homer to break a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning for the Phillies. The Phillies, who have the best record in the majors at 45-20, had won the series opener 7-2 on Saturday.
The Mets (28-36) tied the game in the sixth inning after loading the bases against former Mets pitcher Taijuan Walker. Brandon Nimmo hit an RBI double, and J.D. Martinez followed with a two-run single.
Both teams used six pitchers in the game. Walker allowed two runs and two hits in 5 2/3 innings, while Mets starter Jose Quintana gave up three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Luis Torrens was acquired by the Mets in a cash deal with the Yankees on May 31 and has made a significant impact. With Francisco Alvarez potentially returning soon from a left thumb strain, the Mets face a tough roster decision.
Thomson’s message to the Phillies after the loss was clear: “Shower up, move on… get some rest, stay healthy. This team here, can turn the page real easy.”
