Singapore is blanketed by a thick haze created by smoke drifting in from forest fires burning in neighbouring Indonesia.
On September 14, 2019, air quality in the city state deteriorated to a level considered “unhealthy” for the first time in three years, according to Singapore’s National Environment Agency.
Fire is a common and cheap method used to clear forest areas and open land for palm oil plantations.
The practice in Indonesia has created a seasonal headache for nearby Singapore, as well as Thailand and Malaysia.

A previous version of this story mistakenly asserted that schools were closed, flights were cancelled and masks were distributed in Singapore. The SCMP regrets introducing an error into the story.
