In this week’s pod, we were joined by Sarah Crawley to discuss the barriers to tech adoption in the construction sector.
Sarah is co-founder of SymTerra, a construction management software that allows for real time updates and reporting from site. Sarah, along with fellow co-founder John Ryan, spent a combined 25 years on site management and engineering in construction and infrastructure before taking the leap as tech founders.
Sarah first developed the SymTerra platform in 2019, having completed a series of intensive care ward refurbishments for Mace, and soon brought on John to help grow the business, following a launch in March 2021.
Today, SymTerra has been adopted by over 125 company users across more than 224 projects – from major platform extensions for Crossrail to highways maintenance across the country.
Topics Discussed:
Dominant Construction Tools: The industry mainly relies on paper, Whatsapp, and Excel, opening avenues for tech innovations.
Tech Communication: A pivotal area for development, focusing on enhancing information exchange within the sector.
Technology Adoption: Companies lack incentives to embrace new technologies, highlighting a need for engagement with site teams during tech development.
Site Teams' Concerns: Addressing fears around being tracked and emphasizing the practical benefits of new technologies is crucial.
B2B Software Sales Issues: The prevalent sales model can be problematic when interacting with multiple sub-contractors, necessitating a more inclusive approach.
Technology Design Limitations: Most technologies cater to Tier 1 contractors, overlooking 99% of the industry companies, calling for broader solutions.
Value of Site Teams: Their knowledge is invaluable in developing user-friendly solutions.
Large Language Models: Integration with asset management and scheduling software can create comprehensive, cross-referenced information libraries.
Pandemic Impact: Fewer PMOs on sites have affected project performance knowledge, underscoring the need for improved information flow strategies.
