Explained: How did I-League clubs get Sony on board as a TV Broadcast partner?
The Background: What Went Wrong?
The I-League once again finds itself as the hot topic of of discussion amidst the never ending chaos of Indian Football. In what should’ve been a routine point of discussion regarding production and broadcasting had turned into a fiesty battle between the I-League clubs and the Governing body of Indian Football – AIFF.
On September 15, the I-League Club Association met with AIFF officials, including President Kalyan Chaubey and Deputy General Secretary Sathyanarayan, to resolve the production and broadcasting costs.
The cost of producing all 132 matches was estimated at ₹5.5 crore. AIFF assured the clubs they would contribute ₹2 crore from their funds.
The 12 I-League clubs agreed to pitch in ₹5 lakh each (a total of ₹2.6 crore), covering nearly half the cost. They also suggested issuing a tender to cover 50%, 75%, or 100% of the production costs and proposed finalizing Sony Sports as the TV partner.
The Turning Point: November Protests
The tension reached its peak on November 16, when ILCA protested against AIFF’s lack of clarity. Meanwhile, AIFF officials requested a revised contribution from the clubs.
On November 18, AIFF Secretary General sent a letter to all clubs, asking for confirmation of their willingness to bear ₹30 lakh each toward production costs. This was a significant jump from the earlier agreed ₹5 lakh.
The clubs had until 12 noon on November 19 to confirm their readiness.
Realizing the steep demand, ILCA rallied together and approached AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey for a resolution.
The Resolution: Finding Middle Ground
After hours of deliberation on November 18, a compromise was reached.
Each club agreed to contribute ₹10 lakh, significantly lower than the ₹30 lakh demanded.
AIFF confirmed they would still cover ₹2 crore of the production cost.
Sony Sports was finalized as the broadcasting partner, ensuring television coverage for the season.
This leaves the current financial arrangement as:
₹2 crore by AIFF.
₹1.2 crore by the clubs (₹10 lakh per club).
The remaining amount is yet to be raised through additional funding or sponsorships.
What Lies Ahead for the I-League?
The resolution may have temporarily calmed the waters, but it also exposes the fragile financial ecosystem of Indian football. While the clubs’ determination to ensure TV broadcast is commendable, questions linger:
