We show how we replace the conrod bearing shells on the E39 M5 S62 engine.
Using Plastigauge special measuring plastic, checking the big end bearing clearance on the standard old bearing shells. Then replacing the E39 M5 S62 conrod bearing shells and starting the measuring process again to check the new shells haven't changed the clearance measurement (which ideally should be between 0.025mm to 0.063mm).
Then new Conrod bolts are installed and digitally torqued down in the BMW sequence of 5nm application torque, 20nm jointing torque, then a final 65' degree turn.
This time new genuine BMW bolts were used, but ARP bolts can also be used if needed.
The Oil pump bolts, and Oil pump sprocket nut are also replaced along with upper and lower sump gaskets, and a multitude of seal and O-rings for pretty much every item that is removed including the S62 specific change over solenoid valves in the sump.
Everything is cleaned and washed free of exterior dirt, grit and oil, as well as internally and also fixings, and then reinstalled in the reverse of the removal process.
If your E39 M5 requires conrod bearing shells (aka big end bearing shells) and bolts, or you want to replace them for preventative measures then get in contact with Redish Motorsport in Bristol, UK.
