Is there a better looking town anywhere than Ascona, on the shores of the Swiss part of ‘the greater lake’? Its famously mild climate means palm trees grow on the shore, providing a contrast to the wooded mountains around the lake. The mostly pastel-coloured shops, houses and apartment blocks, many of them restaurants on the ground floor, seem both clean and tidy, and welcoming. Wander the streets or take a cruise on the lake, but don’t miss the 16th century church of San Pietro e Paolo in the old town, easily recognised by its bell tower, which is higher than anything else in town.
