COVID-19 a major cause of higher poverty incidence
NEDA Sec. Arsenio Balisacan says effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the prolonged strict lockdowns, were a major factor in the higher poverty incidence in 2021.
The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that 18.1% of Filipinos, or around 19.99 million, are considered poor.
The PSA says P12,030 per month is the 2021 poverty threshold, which is the minimum a family of five would need to meet basic needs.
NEDA though aims to reduce poverty incidence by 9% by the end of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s term.
