Auroras, often referred to as the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and Southern Lights (Aurora Australis), are natural atmospheric light shows. They result from the interplay of charged particles from the sun, called the solar wind, with Earth's magnetic field. When the solar wind, comprised of electrons and protons, encounters Earth, it clashes with our planet's protective magnetic shield, known as the magnetosphere. As a result, some of these charged particles are directed into the ionosphere, an upper atmospheric layer.
