Hamilton was the place to be earlier today to help celebrate National Indigenous History Month. It’s marked as a time to learn and reflect on the rich history and heritage of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Dancing, music, and traditions were in the spotlight as crowds gathered to soak up the sun and cultures of Indigenous people from this area.
This is the 25th year for the festival, which gets bigger every year.
Many of the volunteers and performers today are from the First Nations, Metis, and Inuit.
According to Statistics Canada, the latest census from 2021 reports there are more than 1.8 million Indigenous people in Canada, making up 5% of the country’s population.
Ontario has the largest amount at 23.9%, and there was a 9.7% growth from 2016 to 2021.
