Today we are talking about 5 menopause myths and facts pertaining to women and aging, and common menopause experiences. Menopause is the term used to describe the two-year period of women's life when they stop menstruating as a result of a natural reduction in estrogen. Decreased estrogen can cause a huge range of symptoms, which women will experience in varying degrees depending upon their general health, weight and family history. Most symptoms of menopause are either physical or psychological and affect different parts of the body:
- Fatigue due to reduced hormone levels that keep you awake at night
- Irregular periods (when periods either stop occurring or become infrequent and unsubstantial)
- Weight gain due to fluctuating hormone levels that stall fat burning throughout your day
- Decreased cognitive function
- Difficulty sleeping related to mood swings and due to more time required for urination during
If you are a woman over 40 or 50, here’s a brief overview of the 5 myths of menopause I want to pass along to you in this video. Please watch until the end for more detailed explanation, and feel free to share your own experiences in the comments below.
Myth #1:
• Menopause is an illness. Menopause is just a phase of a woman’s life - not an illness or a disease. It’s simply a transition.
Myth #2:
• If you are around 51 or 52 and missed a few periods, you’re in menopause. In reality, menopause is the day after you have not had a period of 12 full months.
Myth #3:
• You’re going to gain weight and there I nothing I can do about it. Yes, weight gain is one of the symptoms, but I have seen women in some of the best shapes of their life after menopause because they started taking care of themselves even more.
Myth #4:
• Being in menopause means you’re old and past your prime. Yes, this is a time of change, but there are so many women 50 plus thriving and surviving in all sorts of ways.
Myth #5:
• Hot flashes and having problems sleeping and weight gain are they only symptoms of menopause. In fact, there are dozens of symptoms, and you’re not alone!
When it comes to women and aging, menopause was still not very well understood just a few decades ago. Thankfully, all of that has changed now and we, as women, are more aware of all the aspects that come with menopause, good or bad. Whether they are myths, or truths - they all need to be talked about so we can tackle each one as it arises.
For many women, facing menopause can be a tough experience to go through. But it's a natural part of the life process.
