My preferred set-up, I assemble all the parts of a ROBINSON Mercury Vapour MOTH TRAP ready for garden or field use. I also mention two of my favourite books - one for identifying moths & one for identifying caterpillars:
Moths of the British Isles - Bernard Skinner
Caterpillars of the British Isles - Jim Porter
I will follow up this video with another showing what moths & beetles were trapped in the next few uses of this effective Mercury Vapour Trap.
Moths are mostly identified & released instantly the following morning. Occasionally I hold back a hawkmoth or two & let them lay eggs - I then rear up the caterpillars (my favourite stage of the lifecycle) & am able to release a great deal of moths when the pupae hatch the following year. This is my own small way of helping Hawkmoth conservation whilst being able to enjoy rearing caterpillars at the same time! Note: one of the moths I end up getting is a Privet Hawkmoth & she lays eggs for me - I will also be posting a caterpillar rearing video of these in the near future.
