(31 Oct 2017) Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday harshly criticised an election rerun in which President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner, saying it should be scrapped in favour of yet another vote and that the opposition would continue to protest in the streets.
Odinga's first public comments since election results were announced Monday suggested that Kenya's political and ethnic tensions are unlikely to dissipate anytime soon.
The opposition leader, who boycotted the vote on 26 October, hinted that his supporters could appeal to the nation's highest court to nullify a presidential election for the second time since August.
His speech was closely followed by his supporters in opposition stronghold Kisumu, which saw no voting during the election rerun after both voters and polling officers stayed away from polling stations.
Dozens gathered to watch on screens in electronics store windows.
The city seems to be digesting Odinga’s words carefully, and so far there have been no reports of violent protests similar to those Kisumu has witnessed over recent weeks.
